My Intellectual Property Law Guide is pleased to announce the sixth edition of its Annual International Virtual Debate Competition, open to all tertiary institution students across Africa. As an organization committed to advancing intellectual property (IP) awareness on the continent, we invite eligible participants to join this special edition.
Theme: Securing Our Future: IP and the Rhythm of African Music
This year’s theme, “Securing Our Future: IP and the Rhythm of African Music,” highlights how intellectual property can protect and promote African music in the evolving 21st-century landscape. The competition will explore the dynamic role of IP in safeguarding Africa’s musical heritage and fostering sustainable development. Carefully selected debate topics will guide participants in examining the intersection of IP rights and the preservation, growth, and global impact of Africa’s vibrant music industry.

Competition Details
– Duration for Entry submission: May 1st – June 5th, 2025
– Theme: “Securing our Future: IP and the Rhythm of African Music”
– Objective: To explore the dynamic role of IP in safeguarding Africa’s musical heritage and fostering sustainable development
Competition Stages: The preliminary stage of the 2025 MIPLG Debate Competition consists of an essay writing round based on the theme: “Securing Our Future: IP and the Rhythm of African Music.”
Subsequent rounds will feature an online debate between qualifying teams. Each round; (the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final) will focus on a distinct topic related to the overarching theme of the 2025 edition.
Participation Guidelines
– Team Composition: One team of 2 persons per school
– Multiple Entries: Only one team per school will advance to the next stage
Submission Deadline
– Initial Deadline: June 5, 2025, 11:59 PM (no extensions planned)
– Information Session: Organized for qualified teams to guide them through the oral stage
- Dress Code: Decent and professional attire, with decent African attire encouraged
