The MIPLG debate competition is an annual event designed for African youths. With a focus on students of tertiary institutions across every discipline, we stir crucial conversations around IP and related areas, encourage the development of research, cognitive and academic skills in participants through competition-based learning (CBL).
Launched 26 July 2020, our strategic outcomes have since positioned this competition at the heart of youth engagement in IP and related areas in Africa. With hundreds of entries from over 60 tertiary institutions across Africa, each year has returned a winning team through a rigorous process – from essay assessments to debate rounds. We are proud of our reach and significance in participating countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Cameroon. We continue to encourage participation from other African countries.

WIPO has provided scholarships to over 48 students from the competition.
By creating an all-inclusive active-learning system, we continue to inspire IP engagement across disciplines, discover emerging IP leaders and encourage student-led advocacy on the continent. Our team is determined to expand our reach, connecting young African voices and promoting knowledge exchange around IP and related areas.
